Toynol® CATB-61 Platinum Catalyst Inhibitor

Toynol® CATB-61 High-Efficiency Platinum Catalyst Inhibitor

Abstract

Toynol® CATB-61 is an acetylenic alcohol catalyst inhibitor developed to solve the challenge of controlling platinum catalyst activity in silicone product manufacturing and application. Its key function is to form temporary chemical bonds with the platinum catalyst through acetylenic unsaturated bonds, inhibiting catalyst activity at low temperature (e.g., 150 °C), thereby achieving latency control of the reaction. Compared with conventional solutions, it is easy to handle, highly selective and suitable for one-component systems, making it a suitable option for high-end applications such as silicone coatings, polymer materials and adhesives.

Key Performance Indicators

Performance CATB-61
Low-temperature inhibition Effectively inhibits platinum catalyst activity below 100 °C
High-temperature release Volatilizes and releases catalyst activity above 150 °C (CATB-61)
Reaction latency Achieves temperature-triggered reaction control in one-component systems
Compatibility Good compatibility with silicone resins and platinum catalysts

Main Features and Advantages

  • Precise temperature control: Regulates catalyst activity over different temperature ranges through boiling-point differences to meet diverse process requirements.
  • Ease of handling: Added directly to the mixed system with no complex pretreatment, simplifying the production process.
  • Excellent latency: Suitable for one-component systems, remaining stable during storage and transport and triggered by heating at the time of use.
  • Broad compatibility: Compatible with various silicone resins and platinum catalysts (such as chloroplatinic acid) without affecting final product performance.

Recommended Application Fields

  • Silicone coatings: Used in high-temperature-curing silicone coatings, such as high-temperature-resistant and waterproof coatings, to achieve storage stability and rapid curing during application, suitable for protective coatings in automotive, aerospace and other fields.
  • Polymer materials: As a latent catalyst control agent in the synthesis of silicone rubber and silicone resins, ensuring a controllable reaction during processing and improving mechanical properties and weathering resistance.
  • Adhesives and sealants: Used in one-component silicone adhesives, such as electronic encapsulants and construction sealants, preventing pre-curing at room temperature and reacting quickly on heating to improve bond strength and reliability.
  • Electronic packaging materials: Controls the addition reaction in semiconductor and LED packaging to avoid premature gelation and ensure packaging precision and long-term stability.
  • Textile finishing agents: Used in silicone textile auxiliaries for low-temperature storage and high-temperature finishing, improving fabric hand feel and durability.

Usage and Recommended Dosage

Addition order:

  • First mix the silicone oil components thoroughly.
  • Weigh out Toynol® CATB-61 at 0.3% of the total silicone oil, add it together with the platinum catalyst, and stir to form catalyst solution B.
  • Add solution B to the mixed silicone oil and stir thoroughly.

Temperature control:

  • Keep the storage and operating temperature below 40 °C to avoid premature release of activity.
  • The reaction trigger temperature is set by the product boiling point (CATB-61: >150 °C).

Recommended dosage: Generally 0.1%-0.5% of the total system; the specific dosage should be determined by dosage screening.

Safety and Storage

  • Safety notes: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. In case of skin contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water; in case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
  • Storage: Store sealed in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, away from heat, sparks and open flames. Recommended storage temperature range is 5 °C-40 °C.
  • Packaging: 25 kg drums, 160 kg drums.
  • Shelf life: 24 months from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the main difference between CATB-61 and CATB-72? How do I choose?

A: The two have similar chemical structures but different boiling points (CATB-61: 150-151 °C; CATB-72: 170-172 °C). Choose based on the target reaction trigger temperature: if triggering at a lower temperature (around 150 °C) is needed, choose CATB-61; if triggering at a higher temperature (above 170 °C) is needed, choose CATB-72.

Q: Can this product be used with other types of catalysts (e.g., titanium-based)?

A: The Toynol® CATB series is designed specifically for platinum catalysts, and its mechanism relies on forming chemical bonds with platinum. Compatibility with non-platinum catalysts (such as titanium-based) is unverified; a small-scale test in advance is recommended.

Q: In a one-component system, how do I ensure no pre-reaction occurs during storage?

A: This product forms a stable complex with the platinum catalyst at low temperature (<100 °C), effectively inhibiting activity. As long as the storage temperature is kept below 40 °C, pre-reaction can be avoided. At the time of use, activity is released by heating above the boiling point.

Q: Will an addition level above 0.5% affect final product performance?

A: Over-addition may delay the reaction trigger or leave residues that affect performance. It is recommended to optimize the dosage through a dosage screening (e.g., 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%) to balance latency and reaction efficiency.
