Toynol® D-502 Foam-Control Wetting Agent
Toynol® D-502 Foam-Control Wetting Agent
Abstract
Toynol® D-502 is a nonionic surfactant developed to solve poor wetting, cratering and inadequate leveling in waterborne systems. It effectively reduces static and dynamic surface tension (static surface tension 35.2 dyn/cm in a 0.1% aqueous solution), provides excellent foam control and promotes flow and leveling, and withstands operating conditions up to a cloud point of 46°C. Compared with conventional solutions, it offers good water solubility, strong compatibility and is APEO-free, environmentally safe. It is particularly recommended for waterborne desktop printing inks, pigment inks and thermal-transfer inks.

Main Features and Advantages
- Highly efficient wetting: Significantly reduces dynamic and static surface tension of waterborne systems, effectively solving cratering and poor wetting.
- Excellent foam control: Combines wetting and foam control, reducing foam problems in the system.
- Environmentally safe: APEO-free, meeting environmental requirements.
- Cost-effective: Effective at low use levels (0.3%–2%), offering high cost performance and lowering overall customer cost.
Recommended Application Fields
- Waterborne industrial coatings: Wetting and leveling of automotive, furniture, metal protective and coil coatings.
- Waterborne inks and varnishes: Wetting and leveling of plastic printing inks, paper printing inks and packaging inks.
- Inkjet inks: Flow and anti-spatter of inkjet and thermal-transfer inks.
- Adhesive systems: Solves white spots, pinholes and microbubbles in waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives and laminating adhesives.
- Paper coatings: Surface treatment of coated paper to improve coating uniformity.
- Leather finishes: Wetting and leveling of leather surface treatment agents.
Usage and Recommended Dosage
Addition timing: Add after other surfactants and polymers, and before pigments, fillers and other solids.
Addition method: May be added directly or appropriately pre-diluted, then stirred into the system until uniform.
Mixing: Stir continuously for 15–30 minutes to ensure thorough mixing; if viscosity rises, mild heating may be applied.
Dosage optimization: Start from the lower end of the recommended range and determine the optimal level through dosage screening.
| Application | Basis | Recommended dosage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waterborne industrial coatings | Total formulation | 0.3–0.5% | Determine via dosage screening |
| Inkjet inks | Total formulation | 0.3–1% | Determine via dosage screening |
| Waterborne inks and varnishes | Total formulation | 0.3–2% | Determine via dosage screening |
| Other fields | Total formulation | 0.3–1% | Determine via dosage screening |
Safety and Storage
- Safety precautions: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety glasses and gloves) during handling. On skin contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water; if splashed into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
- Storage conditions: Store sealed in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place at room temperature, away from heat, sparks and open flames.
- During low-temperature transport and storage, the product may solidify or crystallize; heating to the melting point and stirring restores it without affecting performance.
- Transport and store as a Class C product.
- Packaging: 25 kg drums, 200 kg drums, 1000 kg drums.
- Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under recommended storage conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Toynol D-502 stable in acidic or alkaline systems?
A: Yes. As a nonionic surfactant, D-502 has good stability over a wide pH range (both acidic and alkaline conditions), suitable for various waterborne systems.
Q: Is this product suitable for high-speed printing ink systems?
A: Very suitable. D-502 effectively reduces dynamic surface tension, significantly improving wetting and leveling of inks during high-speed printing and preventing uneven printing.
Q: What should I do if the system solidifies or crystallizes?
A: This is a normal physical phenomenon. Heat the product to above room temperature (about 25–40°C), stir thoroughly, and it returns to its original state with no effect on performance.
Q: Any advice on using this product together with a defoamer?
A: D-502 has inherent foam-control capability, but in systems requiring additional defoaming it can be used with most silicone and non-silicone defoamers. Run a compatibility test first; the general addition order is wetting agent first, then defoamer.
