Toynol® FS-204 Acetylenic Diol Surfactant

Toynol® FS-204 Acetylenic Diol Surfactant

In the production and application of waterborne coatings, inks and adhesives, low-surface-energy substrates such as plastics and metals are prone to insufficient wetting, cratering, fisheyes, uneven coating and microbubbles. Conventional wetting agents improve spreading but may increase foam, destabilize leveling or alter system compatibility.

Toynol® FS-204 is a nonionic surfactant based on an acetylenic diol structure, used to improve dynamic wetting, spreading, foam control, flow and leveling in waterborne systems. It is suitable for waterborne industrial coatings, waterborne inks, electrophoretic coatings, adhesives and other formulations requiring low-foam wetting.

Core Value

Formulation or application pain point Value of FS-204
Insufficient substrate wetting, prone to cratering or fisheyes Lowers system surface tension, improving spreading of coatings or inks on the substrate
Microbubbles during mixing, high-speed coating or printing Provides auxiliary antifoaming and deaeration to help reduce microbubble defects
Uneven coating and slow leveling Improves liquid flow and spreading uniformity on the substrate
Conventional additives may affect system compatibility A nonionic surfactant with good compatibility with most anionic and nonionic systems; verify performance in the formulation

Key Technical Advantages

  • Dynamic wetting performance: Reduces dynamic and static surface tension, suitable for high-speed coating, roller coating and printing applications that demand dynamic wetting.
  • Wetting and spreading: Helps improve wetting of plastics, metals and other substrates, reducing surface defects caused by insufficient spreading.
  • Auxiliary antifoaming and deaeration: Helps control microbubbles generated during production mixing and application; for systems with severe foam, combine with a dedicated defoamer.
  • Flow and leveling assistance: Improves coating uniformity and film or print appearance.
  • Environmental profile: APEO-free per product data; verify compliance against the latest TDS, SDS and customer regulations.

Recommended Application Fields

Waterborne industrial coatings

Improves wetting and spreading on metals, plastics and other substrates, helping resolve cratering, fisheyes, insufficient leveling and application microbubbles.

Waterborne inks and varnishes

Suitable for high-speed printing, gravure printing and roller coating, helping improve coating uniformity and reduce streaks and local cratering caused by insufficient dynamic wetting.

Electrophoretic coatings

Improves system wetting and assists foam control during production; verify the actual addition level against the electrophoretic process and bath conditions.

Waterborne adhesives

Improves spreading uniformity of the adhesive on substrates and helps reduce microbubbles during production and coating.

Other applications

May be used in paper coatings, leather finishes, fountain solutions and other waterborne formulations requiring wetting and foam control.

Usage and Recommended Dosage

  1. Add after other surfactants and polymers to facilitate full dispersion in the system.
  2. If the formulation contains pigments, fillers and other solids, consider adding FS-204 before the solids to improve wetting in advance and suppress agitation-induced foam.
  3. The product may be added directly, or pre-diluted with a suitable polar solvent.
  4. Stir continuously for about 15–30 minutes after addition to ensure full dispersion.
  5. If the product solidifies due to low-temperature storage or transport, heat to about 30–40°C and stir to restore flow.
Application Recommended dosage, % of total formulation
Waterborne industrial coatings 0.3%–0.5%
Electrophoretic coatings, waterborne inks 0.3%–1.0%
Other waterborne systems 0.3%–1.0%

Important: The above levels are for formulation development reference only. The optimal dosage depends on resin, pigments and fillers, substrate, application method and other additives; determine through dosage screening.

Safety, Storage and Packaging

  • Handling safety: Wear safety glasses, gloves and other appropriate protective equipment during handling.
  • Contact handling: On skin contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water; if it enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
  • Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, well-ventilated, dry place, away from high temperatures and heat, sparks and open flames; recommended storage temperature 5–40°C.
  • Packaging: 25 kg drums, 180 kg drums.
  • Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under recommended storage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What waterborne coating problems does FS-204 mainly solve?

FS-204 mainly improves dynamic wetting, substrate spreading, microbubble control and leveling. For plastics, metals and other substrates, it helps reduce cratering, fisheyes and uneven coating caused by insufficient wetting. Actual results also depend on resin, pigments and fillers, application environment and substrate cleanliness.

2. Is FS-204 a defoamer or a wetting agent?

FS-204 is primarily an acetylenic diol nonionic surfactant with auxiliary antifoaming and deaeration. In systems without severe foam, it can provide both wetting and foam control; for stubborn foam, combine with a dedicated defoamer and test.

3. FS-204 is a waxy solid. How is it used in production?

FS-204 may appear as a white to pale yellow waxy solid at room temperature. After low-temperature transport or storage, preheat to about 30–40°C and stir to restore flow, then add directly, or pre-dilute with a suitable polar solvent.

4. Is FS-204 suitable for high-speed coating and printing?

FS-204 provides dynamic wetting and spreading assistance, suitable for high-speed coating, roller coating and waterborne inks. For high-speed processes, run a small-scale test against actual coating speed, substrate type and formulation foaming.

5. Does FS-204 affect film gloss or intercoat adhesion?

At a suitable dosage, the wetting, spreading and foam-control effects of FS-204 usually help improve film appearance. Because resins, substrates and processes vary widely, verify gloss, recoatability and intercoat adhesion through actual formulation testing.
