Toynol® FS-204DPM Acetylenic Diol Glycol Solution

Toynol® FS-204DPM Acetylenic Diol Glycol Solution

Abstract

Toynol® FS-204DPM is a nonionic/gemini surfactant based on a unique acetylenic diol chemical structure (CAS: 126-86-3), designed to solve core processing challenges such as dynamic wetting, foam control and leveling defects in waterborne systems (such as industrial coatings, inks and adhesives). Its core value lies in efficiently reducing dynamic and static surface tension (0.1% aqueous solution, 25°C: static 37.7 dyn/cm, dynamic 38.5 dyn/cm), providing excellent wetting, spreading, foam control (antifoaming/deaeration) and flow promotion. Compared with conventional silicone defoamers, it provides outstanding foam control while avoiding the cratering risk that silicone defoamers may introduce, and is APEO-free and environmentally compliant — a suitable option for high-speed coating, printing and other high-performance applications. It is especially recommended for waterborne wood coatings.

Main Features and Advantages

  • Excellent wetting performance: Thanks to its gemini structure, it rapidly reduces dynamic and static surface tension, effectively solving cratering and fisheyes on difficult-to-wet substrates such as plastics and metals.
  • Efficient foam control: Combines antifoaming and deaeration, especially suited to suppressing microbubbles generated during production mixing and high-speed coating, and can be used as an alternative to defoamers.
  • Flow and leveling promotion: Improves coating uniformity for better film appearance and performance.
  • Environmentally compatible: APEO-free and compatible with most anionic and nonionic systems.

Recommended Application Fields

  • Waterborne industrial coatings: Solves cratering, poor leveling, inadequate wetting and bubble problems during application.
  • Electrophoretic coatings: Improves wetting and controls foam during the electrophoretic process.
  • Waterborne inks and varnishes: Adapts to high-speed printing, improving print uniformity and reducing bubbles.
  • Adhesives: Ensures uniform coating and suppresses foam during production.
  • Paper coatings, leather finishes, fountain solutions: Serves as an efficient wetting and dispersing agent.

Usage and Recommended Dosage

Addition sequence: For best results, add after other surfactants and polymers to ensure full dissolution or dispersion, and preferably before pigments, fillers and other solids to wet the system in advance and suppress agitation-induced foam.

Pre-treatment: If the product solidifies due to low-temperature transport or storage, heat to its melting point (about 30–40°C) and stir to restore the liquid state without affecting performance.

Addition and dispersion: May be added directly or pre-diluted; stir continuously for 15–30 minutes after addition to ensure uniform dispersion.

Recommended dosage (based on total formulation):

  • Waterborne industrial coatings: 0.3%–0.5%
  • Electrophoretic coatings, waterborne inks: 0.3%–1.0%
  • Other fields: 0.3%–1.0%
  • Note: Determine the optimal dosage through dosage screening.

Safety and Storage

  • Safety precautions: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety glasses and gloves) during handling. On skin contact, wash with soapy water and clean water; if splashed into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
  • Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, well-ventilated, dry place, away from heat, sparks and open flames, at room temperature. May solidify or crystallize at low temperatures; heat to the melting point and stir to restore without affecting performance.
  • Packaging: 25 kg drums, 204 kg drums, 1000 kg drums.
  • Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under recommended storage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the compatibility of FS-204E with anionic or other nonionic surfactants?

A: The product has good compatibility with most anionic and nonionic additives. For best results, we recommend a small-scale compatibility test before formal use.

Q: Is the product stable in high-temperature systems?

A: Yes. The product is stable under the high-temperature conditions of typical industrial applications. If the system is exposed to high temperature for extended periods, verify long-term thermal stability through testing.

Q: What is the main difference between FS-204E as a “foam-control agent” and a conventional “defoamer”?

A: Conventional defoamers eliminate existing foam at a later stage through a “foam-breaking” mechanism. As a wetting foam-control agent, FS-204E suppresses foam at the source by reducing surface tension, while also eliminating microbubbles — better suited to high-speed coating and other processes with very demanding foam-control requirements.

Q: In high-speed coating applications (such as gravure printing and roller coating), what are the main advantages of FS-204E?

A: The core advantage is its excellent dynamic surface tension reduction. Dynamic wetting is critical in high-speed coating. FS-204E migrates quickly to newly formed interfaces, effectively reducing dynamic surface tension and preventing uneven coating, streaks and microbubbles caused by wetting lagging behind coating speed.

Q: Can it fully replace conventional silicone defoamers?

A: In most waterborne systems, FS-204E can significantly reduce or even fully replace conventional defoamers. Its advantage is that it controls foam without introducing cratering risk and provides built-in wetting. For extremely stubborn foam, it can still be combined, with the conventional defoamer dosage substantially reduced.
