Toynol® FS-204PG Acetylenic Diol Glycol Solution

Toynol® FS-204PG Acetylenic Diol Nonionic Multifunctional Wetting and Foam-Control Surfactant

Abstract

Toynol® FS-204PG is a nonionic/gemini surfactant based on a unique acetylenic diol chemistry (CAS: 126-86-3), designed to address key process challenges in waterborne systems (such as industrial coatings, printing inks, and adhesives), including dynamic wetting, foam control, and leveling defects. Its core value lies in efficiently lowering both the dynamic and static surface tension of the system (at 25 °C in a 0.1% aqueous solution: static 37.7 dyn/cm, dynamic 38.5 dyn/cm), delivering excellent wetting, spreading, foam control (suppression/deaeration), and flow promotion. Compared with conventional silicone-based defoamers, it provides effective foam-control performance while helping reduce the risk of cratering, and it is APEO-free and compliant with environmental regulations, making it a suitable option for high-speed coating, printing, and other high-performance applications.

Main Features and Advantages

  • Excellent wetting performance: Thanks to its gemini structure, it rapidly lowers the dynamic and static surface tension of waterborne systems, effectively resolving cratering and fisheyes on hard-to-wet substrates (such as plastics and metals).
  • Efficient foam control: It combines foam-suppression and deaeration capabilities, and is especially suited to suppressing microbubbles generated during production mixing and high-speed coating; it can be used as an alternative to defoamers.
  • Promotes flow and leveling: It improves coating uniformity, giving the coating better appearance and performance.
  • Environmental friendliness and compatibility: APEO-free and compatible with most anionic and nonionic systems; environmentally friendly and safe.

Recommended Application Fields

  • Waterborne industrial coatings: Addresses cratering, poor leveling, poor wetting, and foaming issues during application.
  • Electrodeposition coatings: Improves wetting during electrodeposition and controls foam.
  • Waterborne printing inks and overprint varnishes: Suited to high-speed printing; improves print uniformity and reduces bubbles.
  • Adhesives: Ensures uniform coating and suppresses foam during production.
  • Paper coatings, leather finishing agents, and fountain solutions: Serves as an efficient wetting and dispersing agent.

Usage and Recommended Dosage

Addition sequence: For best results, add after the other surfactants and polymers to ensure full dissolution or dispersion, and preferably before adding solid materials such as pigments and fillers, so that the system is wetted in advance and foam formation during mixing is suppressed.

Pre-treatment: If the product solidifies during low-temperature transport or storage, heat it to its melting point (about 30-40 °C) and stir; it will return to the liquid state without affecting performance.

Addition and dispersion: It can be added directly or after pre-dilution; after addition, stir continuously for 15-30 minutes to ensure uniform dispersion.

Recommended dosage (based on total formulation):

  • Waterborne industrial coatings: 0.3% – 0.5%
  • Electrodeposition coatings, waterborne printing inks: 0.3% – 1.0%
  • Other fields: 0.3% – 1.0%
  • Note: The optimal dosage should be determined by a dose-response study.

Safety and Storage

  • Safety note: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. On skin contact, wash with soap and water; if it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
  • Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, ventilated, dry place, away from heat, sparks and open flames, at room temperature. The product may solidify or crystallize at low temperatures; heating to the melting point with stirring restores it to its original state without affecting performance.
  • Packaging: 25 kg drums; 180 kg drums; 950 kg drums.
  • Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.
  • Transport classification: (Compliant with GB/T 190-2009).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How compatible is Toynol FS-204PG with anionic or other nonionic surfactants?

A: This product is compatible with most anionic and nonionic additives. To ensure the best results, however, we recommend running a small-scale compatibility test before full use.

Q: Is this product stable in high-temperature systems?

A: Yes. The product remains stable under the high-temperature conditions of typical industrial applications. If the system temperature stays elevated for extended periods, we recommend verifying its long-term thermal stability by testing.

Q: What is the main difference between FS-204PG as a foam-control agent and a conventional defoamer?

A: Conventional defoamers mainly remove foam after it forms through a foam-breaking mechanism. As a wetting and foam-control agent, FS-204PG works primarily by lowering surface tension to suppress foam at the source, while also eliminating microbubbles, making it better suited to processes with demanding foam-control requirements such as high-speed coating.

Q: What are the main advantages of FS-204PG in high-speed coating applications (such as gravure printing and roller coating)?

A: The core advantage is its excellent dynamic surface-tension reduction. In high-speed coating, dynamic wetting is critical. FS-204PG migrates rapidly to newly formed interfaces and effectively lowers dynamic surface tension, thereby preventing coating non-uniformity, striping, and microbubbles caused by the wetting rate failing to keep up with the coating speed, ensuring stable high-speed production and product quality.

Q: Can it fully replace conventional silicone defoamers?

A: In most waterborne systems, FS-204PG can significantly reduce or even fully replace conventional defoamers. Its advantage is that it defoams without introducing a cratering risk while also providing wetting. For extremely stubborn foam, it can still be combined with a conventional defoamer, but the defoamer dosage can be substantially reduced.
