Toynol® HD-23 Water-Resistant Dispersant
Toynol® HD-23 High-Performance Water-Resistant Dispersant
Abstract
Toynol HD-23 is a high-performance dispersant developed to solve the dispersion problems of inorganic powders (such as titanium dioxide and carbon black) in waterborne coatings and ink systems. Its chemical description is a mixture of modified styrene-acrylic copolymer and acetylenic diol, and through highly efficient wetting and strong charge repulsion of powders, it achieves rapid viscosity reduction and prevents re-coarsening and agglomeration. Its core advantage is significantly improving color development without sacrificing the water resistance of the film, making it especially suitable for architectural exterior wall paints and other water-resistance-sensitive applications. Compared with conventional polyacrylate dispersants, it does not blister in high-temperature water immersion tests, is more stable, is APEO-free, environmentally friendly and safe, and offers high cost-effectiveness.

Main Features and Advantages
- High-efficiency dispersion: Extremely strong wetting and dispersing ability for hard-to-disperse powders such as carbon black and titanium dioxide, effectively solving powder agglomeration and re-coarsening and improving grinding efficiency.
- Excellent water resistance: Its unique chemical structure imparts excellent pigment dispersion without introducing water-sensitive components the way conventional dispersants do, thereby preserving film water resistance.
- Strong versatility: Suitable for a variety of inorganic powders including titanium dioxide, carbon black, kaolin, and calcium carbonate, one product for multiple uses.
- Environmentally friendly and safe: APEO-free and compliant with environmental regulations.
Recommended Application Fields
- Waterborne architectural coatings: Especially suitable for architectural exterior wall coatings, elastic coatings, and waterproofing coatings with high requirements for water resistance and scrub resistance.
- Waterborne industrial coatings: Used for pigment paste preparation in various waterborne industrial coatings.
- Waterborne printing inks: Used to improve pigment dispersion and color saturation of waterborne printing inks.
- Color concentrates: As a general-purpose dispersant for concentrates, producing highly stable universal color concentrates with excellent color development.
- Leather finishing agents: Used for dispersion of pigments and fillers in leather coatings.
- Powder surface modification: Used for surface treatment of inorganic powders to improve their applicability in waterborne systems.
Usage and Recommended Dosage
Addition sequence: Always add this product to water before the resin and pigment.
Dilution: This product is highly water-soluble and generally requires no dilution; it can be added directly. If dilution is needed, use deionized water and perform a compatibility test.
Recommended dosage (based on total pigment, calculated on dispersant solids content):
- Titanium dioxide: 3% – 7%
- Carbon black: 80% – 150%
- Other powders (such as kaolin, calcium carbonate, etc.): 5% – 50%
- Note: The specific optimum dosage should be determined through dosage screening based on your formulation and process.
Safety and Storage
- Safety precautions: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. If the product contacts the skin, wash with water and soap; if it enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
- Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, well-ventilated, dry place, away from high temperatures and freezing. Recommended storage temperature range: 5 °C to 40 °C.
- Packaging: 25 kg drums, 200 kg drums.
- Special note: The product may solidify or crystallize at low temperatures; warming it to room temperature and stirring thoroughly restores it to its original state without affecting performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why can HD-23 dispersant improve film water resistance?
A: Conventional polyacrylate dispersants introduce water-soluble salts into the film, reducing water resistance. HD-23 uses a special polymer structure whose anchoring groups bind firmly to pigments, and whose chain segments do not strongly interact with water molecules, so it does not become a water-sensitive weak point in the film after completing its dispersing role, thus significantly improving water resistance.
Q: What is the basis for the high dosage (80-150%) of this product for carbon black?
A: Carbon black has a huge specific surface area and requires a large number of dispersant molecules to fully coat its surface, forming stable steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion to prevent re-agglomeration. The recommended high dosage range ensures the best dispersion effect and paste stability. In practice, the most cost-effective critical point can be found through testing.
Q: Can HD-23 be used together with anionic or nonionic wetting agents and defoamers?
A: Yes. HD-23 has good compatibility with anionic and nonionic additives commonly used in waterborne systems. However, as with all formulation work, small-scale compatibility and performance testing before use is strongly recommended to ensure the stability of the entire formulation.
Q: If my system is foam-sensitive, what should I note when using HD-23?
A: HD-23 itself contains an acetylenic diol component and has a certain foam-control ability. However, air may still be introduced and foam generated during high-speed dispersion. It is recommended to use a compatible defoamer (such as Foamic 028) during the grinding stage, and add more defoamer as needed during the let-down stage to fully eliminate foam.
