Toynol® SI-800 Wetting & Leveling Agent for Waterborne Systems
Toynol® SI-800 Waterborne High-Efficiency Wetting and Leveling Agent
Abstract
Toynol® SI-800 leveling agent is a high-performance silicone-based surfactant developed to address substrate wetting and leveling challenges in waterborne systems. Its main functions are to provide strong substrate wetting, effectively prevent cratering defects, and markedly improve coating leveling. Compared with conventional solutions, it combines low-foam performance with high compatibility and excellent freeze-thaw stability, making it a suitable option for premium applications such as waterborne wood coatings, industrial coatings, and printing inks.
Key Performance Indicators
| Performance | SI-800 |
|---|---|
| Static surface tension (0.1% aqueous solution) | 26.4 mN/m |
| Dynamic surface tension at 6 bubbles/s (0.1% aqueous solution) | 31.5 mN/m |
| Foam characteristics | Low foam |
| Freeze-thaw stability | Excellent, recovers on heating |
Main Features and Advantages
- Superior wetting: Excellent spreading on hard-to-wet surfaces, effectively improving coating uniformity
- Anti-cratering effect: Markedly reduces surface defects and improves coating appearance
- Leveling promotion: Promotes liquid flow for a flat, smooth surface finish
- Low-foam and compatibility: Low-foam performance with good compatibility with most waterborne systems
Recommended Application Fields
- Waterborne wood/furniture coatings: Used in waterborne wood coatings for solid-wood furniture, cabinets, etc.; markedly improves wetting of wood pores, prevents cratering, and enhances film fullness and hand feel.
- Industrial coatings: Suitable for industrial coating of metal surfaces such as construction machinery and automotive parts; enhances substrate adhesion and avoids defects such as sagging and orange peel.
- Printing inks: Used in waterborne flexographic and gravure printing inks; improves wetting of hard-to-adhere substrates such as PE and PP, ensuring clear, complete print patterns.
- Plastic coatings: Used in waterborne coating of plastic substrates such as electronics housings and home appliances; improves coating leveling and enhances product appearance.
- Leather overprint varnish: Used for surface overprint finishing of leather goods, providing uniform, bright gloss and enhanced abrasion resistance.
- Adhesive systems: Improves substrate wetting in waterborne adhesives, increasing initial tack and final bond strength.
Usage and Recommended Dosage
Addition sequence: Add after the main resin in the formulation, stirring slowly until fully dispersed.
Dilution: Can be added directly without pre-dilution.
Recommended dosage: The typical dosage is 0.1%-0.5% of the total formulation; the specific dosage should be determined by a dose-response study.
Precautions: It may solidify or crystallize at low temperature; heating to 40 °C with stirring restores it without affecting performance.
Safety and Storage
- Safety note: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. On skin contact, rinse immediately with water; if it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
- Storage conditions: Store sealed in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. The product has good freeze-thaw stability.
- Packaging: 25 kg drums.
- Shelf life: 24 months from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: If the product solidifies or crystallizes at low temperature, how should it be handled? Does it affect performance?
A: This is a physical property of the product and does not affect its chemical performance. Simply heat the product to 40 °C and stir thoroughly until fully dissolved to resume normal use; performance is unaffected.
Q: How do I determine the optimal dosage for my system through testing?
A: We recommend starting at 0.1% and preparing three samples at 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%, then evaluating leveling, wetting, and coating appearance to determine the optimal dosage. Adjust as needed based on substrate type and application requirements.
Q: Can this product be used together with other additives?
A: Yes. SI-800 is compatible with most waterborne-system additives, but we recommend adding in sequence: dispersant first, then leveling agent, and finally other functional additives, so that each performs optimally.
