Toynol® Superwet-320 Low-Foam Acetylenic Diol Nonionic Wetting Agent

Toynol® Superwet-320 High-Efficiency Low-Foam Acetylenic Diol Nonionic Wetting Agent

Abstract

Toynol® Superwet-320 is a nonionic/gemini surfactant based on an acetylenic diol polyether structure, developed to address wetting, cratering, leveling, and foam-control challenges in waterborne systems (such as coatings, printing inks, adhesives, and photovoltaic coolants). Its core function is to powerfully lower dynamic and static surface tension (static surface tension as low as 26.2 dyn/cm in a 0.1% aqueous solution), provide excellent foam-control performance, and promote flow and leveling. Compared with conventional wetting agents, it spreads rapidly at low dosages while being environmentally safe and APEO-free, making it a suitable option for high-speed coating processes and treatment of low-energy substrates. It is especially recommended for wetting and foam control on hard-to-wet substrates.

Main Features and Advantages

  • Efficient wetting: Markedly lowers the dynamic and static surface tension of waterborne systems, rapidly penetrating and wetting low-energy surfaces to effectively prevent cratering.
  • Excellent foam control: Combines good defoaming and foam-suppression performance, helping resolve foaming problems during production and application.
  • Promotes leveling: Improves liquid flow and spreading for a more uniform, level coating or film.
  • Environmentally friendly and safe: The product is APEO-free and complies with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Recommended Application Fields

  • Waterborne industrial coatings: Especially suited to automotive coatings, industrial equipment coatings, coil coatings, etc.; effectively resolves film defects such as poor wetting, cratering, and fisheyes on plastic, metal, and other substrates.
  • Photovoltaic coolant: As an additive, improves the wetting and spreading efficiency of the coolant on photovoltaic panel surfaces, enhances heat dissipation, and helps control foam.
  • Waterborne printing inks and overprint varnishes: Used for printing on non-absorbent substrates such as plastic film and metal foil; improves print uniformity and adaptability to meet high-speed printing requirements.
  • Adhesives: Suitable for waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives, laminating adhesives, etc.; improves coating uniformity, prevents bubble formation, and suits high-speed coating lines.
  • Metalworking fluids: As a wetting component, helps the fluid penetrate and cover the workpiece surface more effectively.
  • Leather finishing agents and ceramic glazes: Applications requiring excellent wetting and leveling.

Usage and Recommended Dosage

Addition timing: Add before pigments, fillers, and other solid materials to aid wetting of solids, and after the other surfactants and polymers to ensure full dissolution and dispersion.

Method of operation: Can be added directly or after pre-dilution; after addition, stir continuously for 15-30 minutes to ensure uniform mixing. Gentle heating can be applied if viscosity rises.

Recommended dosage: The following are general recommendations; the specific dosage should be determined by a dose-response study.

Application scenario Calculation basis Recommended dosage
Waterborne industrial coatings Total formulation 0.3% – 0.5%
Photovoltaic coolant Total formulation 3% – 5%
Waterborne printing inks / overprint varnishes Total formulation 0.3% – 0.5%
Other fields Total formulation 0.3% – 1.0%

Safety and Storage

  • Safety note: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. On skin contact, rinse with water; if it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
  • Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, ventilated, dry place, away from heat, sparks and open flames. Recommended storage temperature is room temperature. This product is transported and stored as a Class C chemical.
  • Low-temperature handling: It may solidify or crystallize at low temperatures; heating to its melting point with stirring restores it without affecting performance.
  • Packaging: 25 kg drums, 200 kg drums, 1000 kg drums.
  • Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.
  • Transport classification: (Compliant with GB/T 190-2009).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How compatible is Superwet-320 with anionic or other nonionic additives?

A: This product is compatible with most anionic and nonionic additives. To be on the safe side, however, we recommend a small-scale compatibility test before use.

Q: Is the product’s performance stable under hard-water conditions?

A: Yes. The product has good chemical stability and maintains its wetting and foam-control performance under ordinary hard-water conditions.

Q: How do I determine the dosage and addition sequence best suited to my production process?

A: The optimal dosage and sequence depend on your specific formulation and process. We strongly recommend starting from the lower end of the recommended dosage and running a dose-response study to determine the optimal approach. Our technical support team can provide free samples and testing guidance.

Q: What should I do if the product solidifies or crystallizes?

A: This is a physical phenomenon at low temperature and does not affect quality. Simply move the product to a warm environment or warm it in a water bath (e.g., to 30-40 °C) and stir thoroughly until it returns to a homogeneous liquid, and it can be used normally.

Q: How does Superwet-320 perform in high-speed coating or printing processes?

A: Excellently. Superwet-320 effectively lowers dynamic surface tension (28.2 dyn/cm at 6 bubbles/s), meaning it migrates rapidly to newly formed interfaces. This makes it well suited to short-duration high-speed coating and printing applications, ensuring process stability and coating uniformity.
