Toynol® Superwet-340 Acetylenic Diol Nonionic Wetting Agent
Toynol® Superwet-340 High-Efficiency Acetylenic Diol Nonionic Wetting Agent
Abstract
Toynol® Superwet-340 is a nonionic acetylenic-diol gemini surfactant developed to address core issues in waterborne systems (such as coatings, printing inks, and adhesives), including difficult wetting of low-energy surfaces and insufficient dynamic wetting. Its main functions are to efficiently lower dynamic/static surface tension, promote flow and leveling, and effectively prevent cratering during application. Compared with conventional wetting agents, it offers excellent compatibility, does not stabilize foam, and is environmentally safe (APEO-free), making it a suitable option for applications with demanding wetting requirements, such as waterborne industrial coatings, photovoltaic coolants, and high-speed printing inks.

Main Features and Advantages
- Efficient wetting: Its unique acetylenic-diol gemini structure rapidly and effectively lowers the dynamic and static surface tension of waterborne systems, readily solving wetting problems on low-energy surfaces (e.g., plastic, silicone).
- Excellent compatibility: Compatible with most resin systems and additives; does not cause foam-stabilization issues and helps maintain system stability.
- Promotes leveling: By eliminating surface-tension non-uniformity, it markedly improves leveling after coating or printing and prevents defects such as cratering and fisheyes.
- Environmentally friendly and safe: The product is free of APEO and other hazardous substances and complies with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
Recommended Application Fields
- Waterborne industrial coatings: Used in automotive, industrial equipment, and wood coatings; resolves wetting-related cratering on plastic, metal, and other substrates and improves film leveling.
- Photovoltaic coolant: As a key wetting component, improves spreading and wetting efficiency of the coolant on photovoltaic panel surfaces and enhances heat transfer.
- Waterborne printing inks and overprint varnishes: Suitable for high-speed printing on plastic film, composite packaging, etc.; ensures print uniformity and avoids white spots and pinholes.
- Adhesives: Used in waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives, assembly adhesives, etc.; improves initial substrate wetting, ensures coating uniformity, and meets high-speed coating line requirements.
- Other fields: Also widely used in metalworking fluids, leather finishing agents, ceramic glazes, and other applications requiring efficient wetting.
Usage and Recommended Dosage
Addition sequence: Add after the other surfactants and polymers to ensure full dissolution and dispersion, and preferably before adding solid materials such as pigments and fillers to aid wetting.
Addition method: Can be added directly or pre-diluted as needed. After addition, stir continuously for 15-30 minutes to ensure uniform mixing.
Recommended dosage: The following are general recommendations; the specific dosage should be determined by a dose-response study.
- Waterborne industrial coatings: 0.3% – 0.5% of total formulation
- Photovoltaic coolant: 3% – 5% of total formulation
- Waterborne printing inks and overprint varnishes: 0.3% – 0.5% of total formulation
- Other fields: 0.3% – 1.0% of total formulation
Safety and Storage
- Safety note: Wear appropriate protective equipment (such as safety goggles and gloves) during handling. Rinse with water on skin contact.
- Storage conditions: Store sealed in a cool, ventilated, dry place, away from heat, sparks and open flames. Store at room temperature.
- Special note: The product may solidify or crystallize at low temperature; warming to room temperature with thorough stirring restores it without affecting performance.
- Packaging: 25 kg drums, 200 kg drums, 1000 kg drums.
- Shelf life: 2 years from the date of manufacture under the specified storage conditions.
- Transport classification: (Compliant with GB/T 190-2009).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Superwet-340 compatible with anionic systems?
A: Yes. As a nonionic surfactant, it is compatible with most anionic and nonionic systems. To be on the safe side, however, we recommend a small-scale compatibility test before use.
Q: If the product solidifies or crystallizes, has it failed? How should it be handled?
A: No, it has not. This is a normal phenomenon determined by its physical properties. Simply move the product to a warm environment (e.g., above 25 °C) or warm it in a water bath while stirring until it fully returns to a homogeneous liquid, and it can be used normally with no effect on performance.
Q: How do I determine the optimal dosage in a photovoltaic coolant formulation?
A: The optimal dosage depends on the coolant base formulation and the specific dynamic-wetting requirements. We recommend starting at 3% and running a dose-response study (e.g., 3%, 4%, 5%) by measuring spreading speed and contact angle on a simulated photovoltaic-panel surface to determine the optimal approach. Our technical support team can provide free samples and testing guidance.
Q: Will this wetting agent affect the water resistance of the film?
A: Owing to its very low dosage and unique molecular structure, at normal dosages (e.g., within 0.5%) it has very little effect on the final film’s water resistance. If water resistance is extremely critical, however, we recommend final verification through a water-resistance test after film formation.
